Pumpkin picking is a time-honored tradition and one of my favorite opportunities to enjoy the crisp autumn air and feel like I’m doing something wholesome and ready for the holidays.
It’s also a great way to get out of the house and exercise. Picking up Pumpkins in Brooklyn is more than just a tradition. It’s a way of life—a chance to commune with Mother Nature and your fellow pumpkin pickers.
Pumpkin picking is a family activity. You get to spend time together while choosing the pumpkin you want to carve and put in your home.
It’s a great way to tie yourself closer to your community because you get to go out in nature and interact with other people shopping for pumpkins.
Before going on a pumpkin picking adventure, research which farms near you offer pumpkins for sale. Often, this will be something the farm does as a seasonal activity, so you must check it out before the season is over!
Once you have found a place that offers pumpkin picking, check their hours of operation so that you don’t miss out on any of the fun.
The best time of day to go pumpkin picking is during the evening or at night because it’s cooler outside then, and there are fewer bugs. Bring water bottles with you so that if you do get thirsty or hungry, it’s easy for everyone in your group to stay hydrated and keep their energy up as they explore around looking for the perfect pumpkin.
Make sure everyone wears comfortable shoes, too—the terrain at most farms can be uneven and difficult for small children or older adults with mobility issues.
Unfortunately, going to the pumpkin patch can be stressful if you don’t know where to go—you have to worry about crowds and prices, among other things.
Fortunately, I’ve already done some of the dirty work for you! If you’re looking for a place in Brooklyn with plenty of pumpkins for sale (and for picking) without being too expensive or too crowded, I’ve got some great options! Here are my top picks:
- Great Meadows Farm Brooklyn
- Queen County Farm museum
- Pumpkin Patch Play and Plaster Craft
- Prospect Park Zoo
- Atlantic Fruit & Vegetable
- Circus Fruits
- Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket
- Luna Park in Coney Island
- Bushwick City Farm
- Pumpkin patch vale park

Queen County Farm Museum may not be the first place that comes to mind when you’re thinking about pumpkin picking, but it should be!
This historic farm has been around since 1697 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The farm is family-owned and operated and offers various experiences—from educational tours to wine tastings.
You can even enjoy a delicious meal there, prepared with ingredients grown right on the farm.
If you’re looking for a picturesque, educational fall activity to experience with your friends or family, this might just be the place. And even if you’re not a fan of pumpkins (we know, you probably don’t exist), Queen County Farm is definitely worth checking out.
It has a lot of activities for you to do, such as tasting apples, visiting animals, and picking pumpkins from the pumpkin field.
The museum has over 47 different types of apples for you to taste. You will find that the apples there are sweet and juicy. The most interesting thing is that each apple has a different flavor. You will have a new experience tasting apples.
Besides tasting apples, the museum also allows you to visit animals such as cows, ducks, and chickens. It is a great experience for you to feed them. Of course, the biggest attraction on the farm is picking pumpkins.
You can pick pumpkins from the pumpkin field on your own or participate in this activity with your family members and friends together.

Are you getting ready to come out to the farm this Fall?
I’ve got some incredible experiences waiting for you!
Pumpkin Patch Play & Plaster Craft is a jam-packed experience for kids of all ages (including ages three and up!) that combines pumpkin picking with playtime in a fantastic, exciting, and brand new indoor play area.
You’ll get access to a two-level playhouse, complete with slides, ball pits, and activities designed by child development professionals. And on top of that, you’ll get a chance to find your perfect pumpkin right there in the field!
Once you’ve selected and had a chance to explore their indoor playspace, you can put your creativity to work in our Plaster Craft workshop. Here, you can make casts of handprints and footprints—or even paint your masterpieces!
They will help you produce crafts that become keepsakes for years to come.
Let’s be honest: pumpkin picking can get old.
Walking through the same rows of orange gourds every year, agonizing over which one to choose, wondering if you should go for the biggest or the most symmetrical. It can really take a toll on your psyche.
But what if I told you there was a better way to spend your Fall?
What if I told you there was a place where this is not just any pumpkin patch you visit once a year but an entire pumpkin-themed amusement park where you can hang out with your friends and play with pumpkins all day long?
At Pumpkin Patch Play and Plaster Craft, they aim to provide only the best pumpkin-themed fun.
You can pick up some fresh pumpkins and enjoy pumpkin-shaped bouncy houses, adult-sized slides made out of pumpkins, and even ride horses around our pumpkin track!
And when you’re done riding around on those horses, they encourage you to go back to our bouncy pumpkin houses—they’re hollowed out so that you can roll around inside them!

Pumpkin Picking at Prospect Park Zoo. There’s a lot of fun to be had at the zoo. You can say “hi” to the animals, you can pet cute rabbits, and you can… pick pumpkins?
Even though it’s not the first thing that comes to mind when you think about going to the zoo, pumpkin picking has become one of the most popular events in New York City. Prospect Park Zoo hosts the event, and it’s a HUGE hit with kids and adults.
The zoo doesn’t grow its own pumpkins—it obtains them from a local farm and then sets up an experience for people who want to pick them for themselves. You don’t have to pay admission if all you want to do is pick pumpkins (though you will have to purchase the pumpkin itself).
You do need a ticket if you want to go into the zoo in addition to picking pumpkins. You’ll also need a ticket if you want to go on the hayride—one of the best parts of pumpkin picking!
This Fall, take a trip to the zoo and go pumpkin picking with animals!
From October 1st to October 31st, Prospect Park Zoo will be offering two different pumpkin-picking experiences: an up-close-and-personal look at some animals you’ve never seen before and a chance to get some great photos of your kids with their favorite zoo animals.
For a little sum, you can get a one-of-a-kind experience that includes:
- A tour of the zoo’s farm and education center
- An opportunity to feed goats, sheep, and chicks
- A chance for your kids to pick their very own pumpkin from our patch (pumpkins are $5 each)
- A photo with your child sitting on the back of one of our tortoises (bring your own camera)

Pumpkin picking is one of our favorite fall activities, and they love to do it at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket!
The market has been around since 1989 and is open year-round. It’s great for anyone looking for a diverse variety of foods or crafts—and, of course, for those searching for the perfect pumpkin to carve this Halloween.
Here’s what to expect when you come to pick your pumpkins at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket:
First, it’s a lot of fun. You’re going to be in a room full of other people just like you—people who love the smell of pumpkin and the feeling of being surrounded by Fall.
There are high ceilings, so the space doesn’t feel cramped. And there are plenty of experts on hand to help with any questions you might have.
For example, did you know that some pumpkins are better for carving than others? That’s right! Some pumpkins have flesh that’s much easier to work with when carving your jack o’lanterns. (And we have those!) But if you’re looking for the perfect pumpkin pie, they’ve got that too!
Another thing: some people have asked about whether or not their children can take part in selecting their own pumpkins. The answer is yes!
In fact, they encourage it! Picking a pumpkin is an important life skill—you’ve gotta get out there and do it yourself. So bring the kiddos along, let them make their own choices, and learn about the wonderful world of pumpkins together!
On weekends, the market features live music performances, fine art demonstrations and sales, and activities for kids.
You’ll find pumpkins galore on any given weekend day from September through November. I look forward to seeing you all there!
