The History of Times Square

The origins of Times Square can be traced back to 1904 when it was known as “Longacre Square”. Longacre Square was a bustling center for theater productions and other entertainment venues.

The name was changed to Times Square in 1905 after the New York Times moved its headquarters to the area from Union Square.

The old New York Times Building was demolished in 1939 and replaced by One Times Square (also known as 1475 Broadway), a 50-story skyscraper that houses the famous New Year’s Ball.
